Sundal Kulambu / Black chana dal gravy

Black chana dal gravy is a common recipe in Northern India ..
It has lots of health benefits ..Eating chickpeas provides you with a vegetarian-friendly source of protein ..Let us see the preparation of this gravy ..

Sundal kulambu ../Black chana dal Gravy ..

Preparation time: 10 hours
Cooking time: 45 mins
Serves: 6

Ingredients:

Karuppu sundal/Black chana dal - 1 cup
Potatoes - 2 (medium sized)
Shallots/Chinna vengaayam - 10
Tomatoes - 2 (medium sized)
Tamarind - a gooseberry sized ball 
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
Chilli powder - 2 tbsp
Coriander powder - 1.5 tbsp 
Jaggery - 2 tsp (optional)
Salt - as required
Coconut - 2 tbsp (minced smally into tooth sized)

For Grinding:

Coconut - 1/2 cup
Cumin seeds/ Jeerakam - 1 tsp
Saunf / Sombu - 2 tsp
Garlic - 2 cloves

Tempering ingredients:

Oil- 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Urad dal - 1 tsp
Dry red chilli - 2
Curry leaves - 1 string

Method:

1. Soak black chana dal overnight (at least for about 8 hours) ..
2. Pressure cook chana dal for about 7-8 whistles and potatoes for about 3 whistles ..each separately ..
3. Now start by grinding coconut, cumin seeds, saunf and garlic into a smooth paste ..
4. Heat kadai, saute onions till it becomes soft, add tomatoes, add in the masalas ..cover and cook till tomatoes turn mushy ..
5. Add in tamarind extract, add in jaggery (optional)
6. Once it boils, add in the ground coconut paste ..
7. Simmer it for few mins ..
8. In a separate tadka pan/tempering pan, heat oil, add in the tempering ingredients ..and pour it over the chana dal gravy ..
9. SUNDAL KULAMBU is ready ..Serve hot with rice/rotis/chapathis ..

Add a tsp of oil, start sauteing shallots ..

Add in tomatoes ..

Add in masalas ..

Cover and cook till tomatoes turn mushy ..

Add in tamarind extract ..

Add in jaggery (optional)

Add in ground coconut paste and let it simmer ..

In a tadka pan, heat oil and add in tempering ingredients ..

Pour it into the gravy ..

Add in these minced coconuts (tooth-sized)
